Dr Tony Vickers is a lifelong advocate
for the use of geographic information (GI) in government.
As a
construction engineer planning and recording the positions
of underground utility plant; as a military surveyor helping
defence project planners to incorporate map data in navigation
and decision support systems; as an elected member of a local
council’s planning committee; and as a consultant and
researcher in property taxation and geodata policy, he has worked on four continents
to help bring about the more effective use of GI. He has
a special interest in the policy aspects of acquisition,
custodianship
and dissemination of GI and the ways in which land markets
and sustainable urban development can be made to work better
