Dr Tony Vickers is a lifelong advocate for the use of geographic information (GI) in government. As a construction engineer planning and recording the positions of underground utility plant; as a military surveyor helping defence project planners to incorporate map data in navigation and decision support systems; as an elected member of a local council’s planning committee; and as a consultant and researcher in property taxation and geodata policy, he has worked on four continents to help bring about the more effective use of GI. He has a special interest in the policy aspects of acquisition, custodianship and dissemination of GI and the ways in which land markets and sustainable urban development can be made to work better in society through the use of GI.
